A TASTE OF HOME

I received this email a while back and would like to share it with you. I think it is a big job and a hugely wonderful undertaking by my awesome daughter. No one understands the stress these GIs and their families are going through like the ones who have struggled through it successfully. While Jon was fighting in Iraq his wife was functioning as a single Mom of 3 teenagers — and it was no picnic!!!

Jon is my hero — and so is his wife!!!

Below is the email I received. I pray you find it in your heart to help this Soldier’s Wife honor & support our Sons & Daughters fighting in the War on Terror.

“As you know, Jon just returned from Iraq and we are thrilled! However, the deployment was NOT a good experience – financially or emotionally (no surprise there, huh?). I hate the thought of other families going through the same financial misery we have been and are still going through because of Jon’s deployment, so I am going to raise funds and try to start a charitable foundation – or find a good one to donate to. I want the funds I raise to go to housing and daily living needs for deployed service members and their families.

“I would like to create a cookbook and use the majority of the funds to help soldiers and their families with housing and living expenses. The cookbook would be titled “A Taste of Home – Favorite Recipes of American Soldiers” – or something like that.  “What I am looking for is submissions from soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, etc. and their families. Anything that they love to eat or drink (that’s legal!). I would like to include the soldiers name, rank & relationship to submitter, and maybe something about the recipe and how it is a favorite.

”Would you like to submit a recipe or two? Will you circulate my request and forms for me? Can you put it in a newsletter? Will you pass the request on to others? I would appreciate ANY help you can give me on this adventure…

 “Thanks so much!!!!”

I hope you and your friends will email your recipes for “A Taste of Home – Favorite Recipes of American Soldiers” cookbook” or you can post here.

A Verse To Ponder
:
Cast your bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.  (Ecclesiastes 11:1, KJV)

My Ponderings:  I recently read that the Hebrew word for bread was also a word for grain. “Cast your bread upon the waters” gives the picture of when the Egyptians threw their grain on the floodwaters of the Nile River as it covered their lands. It looked as though the seed disappeared and was lost forever. But not so, “for thou shalt find it after many days.” In due time where once there was flood waters there came an abundant crop of grain! That’s how it is when we sow our seeds in life. Sometimes it may look as though it has been wasted and is forever lost. BUT GOD never wastes anything! He sees every thing we do (sow) and exactly where and how (attitude) we sowed it. The Law of Sowing & Reaping never fails. Not happy? Too stressed? Anger issues? Start sowing good seed and hoeing out the weeds before they turn to more bad seed. In our gardens weeds left in the ground grow to choke out the good crop we planted. In our lives the same gardening principle applies. Are you “sowing” love, kindness, sharing, mercy, patience, generosity? Let’s start sowing good seed today!

Prayer:
Lord, I thank you that seed sown in faith always produces a harvest.  Help me to dig out the weeds of bad seed sown in my past.  Guide me in consciously sowing good seed and cultivating it.  Amen.

May God richly bless you,
& keep you in all your ways,
Auntie L

  1. That’s a great idea! I’ll bet I can get a couple!!!
Our troops & their families deserve all our support!
Thank you to Jon & his wife for their unselfish serivce to our country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. My husband was a WWII veteran. He had one item he cooked but, especially liked a couple of my recipes. Can I submit more than one? None of them have an especially poignant story with them, though.

  3. To Jon’s Wife:
Thank you for all that you and your children endured while your husband was serving in Iraq. And thank you for caring about other’s in that position and wanting to do someting practical to help them out. You are an inspiration to us all. And please tell your husband Thank you! also.
